Lankan teenager wins big at Intel ISEF in USA

The winner of the ‘Institution of Engineers’, Sri Lanka (IESL) Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) competition 2012, Master Pubudu Kapuge, has done Mother Lanka proud by winning several top awards at the ‘2013 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), in Phoenix, Arizona recently.

“Pubudu Kapuge, a product of Mihintale College, won the First Award of US$3,000 for his project “Ridge cutting machine”, in the Electrical and Mechanical category at the Intel ISEF 2013 Grand Awards Ceremony held last Friday (17), by the Society for Science and the Public, in partnership with the Intel Foundation.
Eng. Tilak De Silva, President of IESL said that this was a highly commendable achievement and the fact that Kapuge was from a rural hamlet makes the award more valuable.
“This also proved that there is hidden talent outside Colombo and more should be done to harness them,” he added.
According to Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, Vice President of IESL, Kapuge’s project has also won a special award, at the Special Awards Ceremony, Thursday night. He has received a US$ 500 cash award from the Ashtavadhani Vidwan Ambati Subbaraya Chetty Foundation.

Over 1,600 high school students from 60 countries had participated in this year's Intel Science and Engineering Fair, the world's largest pre-college science competition, from May 13 -17 in Phoenix, Arizona. They had competed for awards and scholarships worth nearly four million dollars.
In 2008, JIY winners had the opportunity to participate in the esteemed Intel ISEF competition. So far, they have won 08 international awards to their credit.
Junior Inventor of the year competition conducted by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, to promote creativity and innovation among the future generation for last 28 years.
